Ewing, Mildred Lorraine Mellum died peacefully in her sleep June 3rd, 2014 at Croixdale Senior Community Living Home in Bayport, Minnesota. She had just celebrated her 97th birthday the previous weekend with her family. Mildred (Mim) was born May 30, 1917, in Ulen, Minnesota to Jana Pauline Peterson Mellum and Martin Helmer Mellum, both of whom immigrated from Norway. A graduate of Staples high school, Mim went on to attend secretarial school. She moved to Minneapolis where she met the handsome Tom Ewing, who would become her husband on August 3rd, 1946. They moved to Stillwater and opened Ewing's clothing store, which Mim managed. After having children, she continued to work as the bookkeeper and manager for Tom's businesses. Mim was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church for over 60 years. Through the church, she participated in circle (Bible study) and altar guild. Additionally, Mim taught Sunday school and Bible School, she organized church events, and she was a committed mentor. She demonstrated her love of the Lord through her active involvement in her community and participation in many charities. Throughout her lifetime, Mim was an avid puzzler, reader, golfer, bridge player, card shark, grandchild spoiler, and hug giver. Always sharply dressed, her outfits were never without two key ingredients: a fashionable purse and radiant smile. Mim exuded positivity and spoke kindly and genuinely to everyone she encountered. Mim did not have a single mean bone in her body. Loving grandmother "Meme", enjoyed spending time with her family above all. She believed in the goodness of people and once shared that the most important thing she'd learned through the years about love was simply, "giving." She loved well and was well loved. Meme is reunited with her beloved husband, Thomas Robert Ewing, her only son, Robert Hampton Ewing; sisters Verona Juliet Mellum and Hazel Judith Mellum Beck; brother Clinton Arnold Mellum and sister in-law Mildred Qualen Mellum; and her favorite son-in law, Arthur William Saunders III. Meme's spirit is cherished by daughter Roberta Ewing Saunders, granddaughters Christina Ewing Saunders and Alyssa Mellum Saunders and fiancé Eric John Bigham, her loving niece and nephew Lorraine Joyce Williams and Allyn Clair Alme along with many loving grand nieces and nephews; and the beloved W.B. Saunders clan. We thank the team at Croixdale Living Center, Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Pastor Steve Molin, and all those who loved and were loved by Meme. Memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 10th, 2014 at 11AM, visitation at 10AM, at BRADSHAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd, Stillwater, MN 55082 (NW corner of Hwy 36 and Co Rd 5).
