Herje, Brian S. 53, died on Saturday, September 24, 2016, in Minneapolis, MN, surrounded by family and friends. He passed away peacefully after a long illness. Brian Herje was born on November 5, 1962, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Kathryn Leslie and Raymond Herje. He grew up in Golden Valley with older brothers Steve and Robb, and little sister Leslie. Brian graduated from Armstrong High School in 1980, attended vocational school, and worked in the auto parts and technology industries. Brian enjoyed working on cars, computers, and, to the great relief of his family and friends, could fix just about anything for them. He loved scuba diving, spending time at the cabin, collecting things, visiting with friends, and his pets. Brian tried to be kind to everyone, even through difficult times, and always had a joke or story for everyone he met. Nothing made him happier than to make someone laugh or smile. Brian's sister and brothers will most remember him for his laughter, gentle spirit, and generosity -- he was literally willing to give a stranger his last dollar or even the socks off of his feet. Brian is survived by his three siblings, brothers Stephen (Mike) and Robert (Laurie), and sister Leslie. He is also survived by his stepmother Pat Herje, nieces Nicole and Samantha, nephews Corey and Nathan, and numerous cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his much beloved parents, Kathryn Leslie and Raymond Herje. Thanks to Brian's extended family members and friends, particularly Jack Erickson and his dear friend Penni Westrum, who helped support Brian throughout his illness. The family also thanks his providers and support team members, and a very special thanks to his guardian angels, Laurie Larson, CNP, Dr. Vandana Gupta, Amanda Mitby, and all of his friends and providers at the UMMC (his other home). A visitation & memorial service is scheduled for October 28, 2016, 4:30-7:30 pm, at Thomson-Dougherty, 2535 Park Ave., Mpls. As our family always had cats and Brian loved each and every one of them, the family suggests donations to peopleandpetstogether.org or MCIL (Metropolitan Center for Independent Living), 530 Robert St. N., St. Paul, MN 55101.
