Carter, James John of Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, MI, passed away peacefully at age 76 in Grand Rapids on June 22, 2016. Jim was born January 7, 1940 in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Washburn High School (MPLS, MN) and then attended Tufts University (MA) receiving a degree in psychology in 1961. He served two years in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Brown and USS Fortify. He was proud to serve his country. Following service, he attended the University of Minnesota, obtaining his MBA in 1967 and JD in 1968. He moved to Ann Arbor and was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1969. He practiced law and was engaged in many business ventures until 1997. After earning his Teacher's Certification from the University of Michigan, he taught at W.J. Maxey Boys Training School (Whitmore Lake, MI). He resumed the practice of law in 2001. Jim was passionate about renewable energy and assisted with various solar and wind projects. In January 2016 he was elected Board President of the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association. He is survived by his two children, Matthew (Kara) Carter and Anne-Marie Carter, loving partner of many years Patricia Pritchard, his sister Nancy Meikle, granddaughter Amaia Durham, many cherished cousins, and former wife Alice Carter. A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, August 6th, 2016, at the UUAA church, 4001 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. All who knew Jim are encouraged to attend. The memorial service will begin at 11:00 am.
