Schimke, Robert W. AIA. Age 93, of Mpls., passed away April 10, 2016. Born in St. Paul, MN in 1923. Preceded in death by parents Wallace and Grace Schimke, wife's parents Ruth and Mark McCabe; son-in-law Robert Meisch, and daughter-in-law Susan Schimke. Bob was a life long architect and educator. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and the Royal Academy of Arts and Architecture, Stockholm, Sweden with an MFA in Architecture and Urban Design. Delta Tau Delta fraternity [president] while attending the U. of M. Bob taught at the University of Minnesota School of Architecture and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design for many years. He conducted Man, Nature and the Arts teacher workshop series at the Walker Art Center. He had his own firm for over 50 yrs. WWII First Lieutenant in Army Air Corps, Bombardier/Navigator based in Italy. Flew 39 combat missions in Douglas Havoc A-20 and Invader A-26 attack bombers. Bob was devoted to his family; involved with children in scouting, camping, soccer, hockey and theater. Troop 155 Assistant Scoutmaster and Viking Council 1964 National Jamboree Troop Scoutmaster. Past president of the Washburn Hockey Association. Founding member of Lynnhurst Soccer program. As a youth Bob won many vocal competitions with his beautiful voice and performed in Children's Theater productions accompanying his children Sara and Paul. Bob was a jazz drummer who inspired his family to love and play music. Lake Harriet resident on Kings Highway for 60 years. Ran Lake Harriet and attended mass daily. Survived by his wife of 68 years, Kathleen (McCabe); brother, David (Audrey); 6 children, Robert A. (Catherine Engel), Ann Meisch, Paul (Nancy), Sara Harris (Jim), Peter, Philip (Nicole); grandchildren, Katie, Rosie, and Matt Harris, Cedar and Ben Schimke, Vivian and Alex Schimke; great-grandchildren, Henry, Ringo, and Arlo. Funeral service Thursday, April 28 11 AM Church of the Annunciation, 509 W. 54th St., Mpls. MN 55419. Reviewal precedes mass at 10 AM at the church.
