Kareken, John Henry born January 3, 1929 in Buffalo, NY, died of respiratory complications on Saturday, April 2, 2016 in the care of Hospice House, Wausau, WI. John received his Bachelor's degree from the University of New York at Buffalo and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. An economics professor at the University of Minnesota his entire career; he also served as an economic advisor to President John F. Kennedy, as Chairman of the Finance Department within the Carlson School of Management, as the Special Monetary Advisor to several presidents of the Ninth District Federal Reserve Bank, and as a board member for a large bank holding company based in Minneapolis. His professional undertakings also involved numerous contributions to academic publications, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. John was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy (Beenau), his father Michael, his mother Gertrude (Lang) and his older brother Richard. John is survived by his two sons, (David and Mark) and their respective wives (Joy and Jennifer), his grandchildren (Zachary (David), Ashley (Mark) Kareken, Derek, Chris and Karl Skomars) and by his younger brother Francis and his wife (Margaret). John and Nancy's remains will be laid to rest together in mid to late June. The memorial service will be held on June 17th in the Twin Cities at a location yet to be determined.
