Kubera, George R. Age 94, of New Brighton passed away peacefully on March 5. George was raised in N.E. Mpls, attended U of M and U of Calif, and served in the Navy Air Corps for three years. He was commissioned Ensign & awarded Navy wings. He flew torpedo bombers & was destined for the invasion of Japan when the peace treaty was signed & Navy pilots were discharged. Soon thereafter George began working at Cargill, first as an accountant and then as Branch Office Manager in Memphis TN, Buffalo NY, and San Francisco CA. He returned to MN in 1968 & worked in Cargill headquarters as Dept. Mgr, Paymaster & Asst. Controller. He took early retirement, which he enjoyed for 36 years. George was raised by parents Tony & Pauline Kubera with brother Ed & sisters Florence (Shoberg) and Gertrude (Dalluge). He married Elva Lange in 1946 (70 yrs ago!) and they raised two wonderful children: Gregg Kubera (married to Susan Nelson) a retired college professor, musician/composer & award-winning videomaker, and Paula Kubera Kirst, geologist, geophysicist & college professor, of Houston TX. Paula and her husband (Tim Kirst) have 3 sons, Kyle, Logan, & Marshall, & one granddaughter. George was a very private man with much love in his heart for family, for God & Country, for his employer & employees, and his many friends. He was known for his "Papa Pancakes", and "George's SPICE Mix". Always active in civic matters, Boy Scouts, Church, Kiwanis, & Cargill Retirees Group, George also loved fishing, tennis, and woodworking. Services at Christ the King Lutheran Church, New Brighton -- 1900-7th St. NW, New Brighton, Thursday, March 17, 11:00 a.m. Visitation 10:00 a.m.
