Mitterhauser, Klaus Age 83. Klaus Mitterhauser died peacefully at home in North Branch, MN on November 4, 2015. Born in Steyr, Austria on November 22, 1932 to Rudolf Mitterhauser and Emma Hoefermayer, and preceded in death by his sister Utta, brother Peter, and beloved daughter Tonya (Mitterhauser) Thomas. A deep and abiding appreciation for haute cuisine was a dominate force behind much of his life. Classically trained in Vienna, Klaus' adventurous spirit carried him through Switzerland, France, Sweden and Brazil until reaching the USA. A world renowned chef, he won awards including gold and silver medals at the Culinary Olympics. While in Minnesota, where he made home, Klaus founded The 510 Groveland, Mitterhauser La Cuisine and The Library restaurants. He worked as the Executive Chef at La Tortue, The Anchorage and conducted research for General Foods. He coauthored the definitive text on Garmache "The Book of Buffets" while a professor at the Culinary Institute of America. Klaus' artistry extended to sculptures in ice and tallow. Survived by son Mikael Westerlund (grandchildren Winnie and Wilhelm), daughter Sonya, sister and brother-in-law Karin and Herbert Meyer, and longtime love Carolyn "Suzy" Phillips. A celebration of Klaus' life is planned, but not yet scheduled.
