Koernig, Richard D. "Dick" Age 90 of St. Anthony, formerly of South East Minneapolis. Dick was born and raised and very proud of his roots in South East. He attended Marshall High School, leaving to enlist in the United States Marines during World War II. After returning he completed high school and attended the University of MN. He married the love of his life at University Lutheran Church of Hope in 1950. Together they chose a family life where they were active in their neighborhood, in the church, and the schools. They were married for 65 years when she passed in 2016. Dick worked for the Minneapolis Public Schools for over 30 years and retired in December of 1986. He worked part time at Oaks Hardware until dementia forced him to fully retire. Dick was a 50 year member of the Masons. Volunteering was a big part of his life starting with East Side Recreation while he was in college. One of his biggest accomplishments as a volunteer was in the role of President of the Marshall-University Policy Board where he represented the neighborhood in Washington D.C. and helped to secure funding for the merged school. Dick was a life long learner and kept himself busy with stained glass, cooking, work carving, gardening, and his grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife Zona, daughter Lisa Hugo, and grandson Sam Clough. Survived by his daughter Mary and son-in-law Patrick Clough; granddaughters Alexandra Clough, Tessa Hugo, and Lacey Hugo; son-in-law Kirk Hugo; nephew David (Genelle) Koernig; extended family: Nancy Bradley, Rachel and Todd Jensen and family, Megan and Phil Ecker and family. Special thanks to Kelley Deen and the staff at Pearl Garden Memory Care who treated him with dignity and respect in his two years with them. Private family services were held. Memorials are preferred to University Lutheran Church of Hope. Washburn-McReavy.com Hillside Chapel 612-781-1999
