Twin Cities artists have rallied to help raise money for colleague Ann Marsden who is starting a second round of treatment following a diagnosis of cervical cancer last summer. There will be a live auction at the Dakota Jazz Club where an A-list of local musicians are performing in Marsden's honor (see earlier post for roster).

Photographer Alec Soth has donated a rare portrait sitting, and Terry Gydesen chipped in two images of Prince -- also rare -- that she took during his 1993 European tour including this one of a nocturnal visit to Antonio Gaudi's spooky Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona.

Painter Don Holzschuh has contributed one of his colorful urban scenes, and photographer Paul Shambroom donated "Bernice, Louisiana (pop. 1,809)," an image from his 2002 "Meetings" series of portraits of small-town council meetings around the country.

Art Collectors Good Deal Alert: Soth doesn't do many portrait commissions and they tend to be pricey.

"We would love to reach the kind of people who might want to pop for such an extravagance at a 'reasonable' price. Apparently, Alec's portraits go for about $20,000 normally," said benefit organizer Lisa Nebenzahl.

When: Jan. 10, with doors open at 6 p.m., music at 7.

Tickets: $50 reserved seats; $25 at door.

Where: Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant, 1010 Nicollet Av, Mpls. 612-332-1010 or www.dakotacooks.com
