1 Acorn production is dependent on the weather, the overall health of the tree, and other environmental factors. A viable tree will produce acorns every year, but on average an abundant crop will occur every two or three years.
2 Bur oak acorns are the first to fall, usually in late August. Red oak acorns drop in late September through the middle of October. These dates vary across Minnesota.
3 Deer are quick to home in on an oak tree, or a group of oaks, as soon as the acorns begin to fall.
4 When acorns are scarce, it's amazing how quickly they are consumed by wildlife. Take advantage of any falling acorns and try to hunt (within regulations) as soon as they begin to drop.
