NEW TOWN, N.D. — A woman and her three grandchildren have been shot and killed in New Town.

Authorities are investigating whether a man's death in Parshall is connected.

Mountrail County Sheriff Ken Halvorson says that the New Town incident happened about 3 p.m. Sunday, and the death in Parshall about 8:30 p.m. The five bodies are being brought to Bismarck for autopsies.

Halvorson told the Minot Daily News that the four people who died at a residence in New Town are a woman and her three grandchildren -- two boys and a girl.
He also told the paper that the adult male who died in Parshall was from New Town.

New Town School Superintendent Marc Bluestone called off classes Monday because of what he called "the tragedy in our community."

The FBI is joining local law enforcement authorities in the investigation.

Halvorson and FBI spokesman Kyle Loven did not immediately return telephone calls to The Associated Press early Monday.

New Town is on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in northwestern North Dakota. It is the headquarters for the Three Affiliated Tribes.
