The Minnesota Zoo's last remaining dolphins will vanish from view after Sunday.

Damage from saltwater to the innards of their 15-year-old home, Discovery Bay, is the main reason. The place is about to close for a year for structural repairs.

The two dolphins that remain after a series of deaths at the zoo cannot be brought back later, zoo officials say. There aren't enough dolphins available from other zoos and aquariums to create a social group large enough for their well-being, they say, and capturing more from the wild is no longer an option.

The zoo isn't saying yet where the pair is going.

The tank, once fully repaired, is expected to contain "a temporary exhibit of rays and fish until a larger exhibit can be funded and built," according to a written statement from zoo director Lee Ehmke.

A dolphin "open house" has its last day Sunday. Events include, for a fee, zoogoers getting pictures taken with a picture of dolphins Allie or Semo superimposed on a green screen.
