A Savage police officer injured in a crash early Monday morning is still in critical condition with head injuries, and a fund has been set up for donations to help his family with expenses.

Officer Frank Mackall, 39, is still hospitalized at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. Mackall was headed to an address where a prowler had been reported about 1 a.m. when his car slid off the icy road and struck a tree on Glendale Road near 137th Street, the State Patrol said.

The Savage Police Department and South Metro Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 14, of which Mackall is a member, have set up a fund at Klein Bank for donations, city officials say.

Contributors can make donations to the Frank Mackall Benefit Fund at any of the bank's locations or by mail at Klein Bank Savage, Attn: Jill Ryan, c/o Frank Mackall Benefit Fund, 14141 Glendale Road, Savage, MN 55378. Or, to donate with a credit card, visit www.mnfop14.org, click the link for donations and enter "Frank Mackall Fund" in the comments field.

A CaringBridge site also has been created; search for "frankmackall."

Mackall, who is married with three children, lives in Shakopee.
