A 16-year-old boy was charged with murder Thursday after he allegedly helped beat a man to death last month.

Jacquin Malik Boyd, of Minneapolis, was charged in juvenile court; however, because he is at least 16 and charged with a felony, prosecutors have sought to have him stand trial as an adult, according to the Hennepin County attorney's office.

Boyd is charged with killing Kerry Duane Scott, 41, of Hopkins, on Nov. 17. Scott's body was found behind a house just after 11 p.m. in the 3300 block of Girard Avenue N. Later, the Hennepin County medical examiner's office determined he died from blunt-force injuries.

According to witnesses, a number of people, including Crips gang members and Scott, were inside a house when three men began kicking and punching Scott in the kitchen before dragging him outside and continuing to beat him. The men were seen taking turns jumping from a retaining wall onto Scott's body "like a trampoline," a witness told police. One of the men was identified as Boyd, who a witness heard yell, "I'm a killer!"

Boyd was arrested Tuesday. After initially denying that he was at the house where the murder occurred, Boyd said he had started punching Scott after Scott was accused of stealing something. Boyd continued to punch and kick Scott, whom Boyd said tried to fight back.

Boyd appeared in court Thursday and was ordered to be held in the juvenile detention center. Meanwhile, the investigation continues for other possible suspects.
