This week in traffic: Road work on University Avenue, lane closures on 169

After a one week delay, MnDOT begins a new repaving project on University Avenue through northeast Minneapolis on Monday.

Motorists can expect delays between Central Avenue (Hwy. 65) and 27th Avenue NE. as northbound University will be reduced to a single lane. Parking restrictions also will be in place.

Some off-peak and weekday lane and full closures can be expected as the project moves north. It begins near the University/Central intersection. The work will be in progress until late August.

In Elk River, work on Hwy. 10 through downtown has been extended two additional days. The highway will be a single lane through Wednesday from 171st Avenue to Norfolk Avenue. It was supposed to have ended Monday.

In Bloomington, motorists on Hwy. 169 in both directions between Bloomington and Shakopee can expect delays. The left lane will close during non-peak hours for the next two weeks. The lane restrictions will be in place from Stage Coach Road and Old Shakopee Road as MnDOT prepares crossovers ahead of maintenance work scheduled on the Bloomington Ferry Bridge. That will begin on July 26

On I-35E in Eagan and Burnsville, a traffic switch goes into effect on Wednesday. Traffic will shift from the northbound lanes to the southbound lanes. Traffic will still remain in a single-lane configuration in both directions between County Road 42 and Diffley Road. With the shift, motorists on 35E will not be able to access Cedar Avenue as those ramps will be closed.

This will be in effect until the end of July.

Another long closure in the east metro begins Monday. Both directions of Hilton Trail at the intersection of Hwy. 36 will be closed until mid-September. That starts tonight at 10. Motorists will be detoured via Hwy. 36 to Lake Elmo Trail to County Road 12/N. 75th Street back to Hilton Trail.

To the west, Hwy. 36 remains closed from White Bear Avenue to Hwy. 61 as work on the new interchange continues at English Street.

In St. Paul, look for drainage and utility work adjacent to northbound 35E. There also will be work on the southbound side an a traffic might occur later in the week near the Cayuga Bridge.  Also look for disruptions along Mississippi Street as new retaining walls continue.

The Mississippi Street bridge over the BNSF railroad tracks continues. And pile driving for abutments for the new Cayuga Street E bridge could bring additional vibrations and noise to the area just north of downtown St. Paul.

Look for the work zone on I-694 between Hwy. 252 and University Avenue to spead farther east to Central Avenue in the next few days. Already ramps from University Avenue and Central Avenue to eastbound 694 have been closed in preparation for this.  Drivers on University and Central will need to follow the detours or head east to Silver Lake Road to get on 694.
