A look at travel in the metro this weekend

A beautiful weekend weatherwise - a few clouds but otherwise sunny with highs in the 50s Saturday and 60s Sunday - will make it a good weekend for crews working on metro area roads, but maybe not so nice for motorists.

Viking fans take note: Southbound Hiawatha Avenue will be closed from 28th Street to 50th Street Saturday and Sunday for a traffic signal upgrade.  That's on top of the closure in both directions at 26th Street.  That could make leaving the game a bit more tricky. Plan on a crowd on 35W, Lyndale, Cedar and Minnehaha avenues.

In Arden Hills, eastbound 694 from 35W and Hwy. 10 will be reduced to a single lane starting at 7 p.m. Friday and that will last until 6 a.m. Monday. Delays are expected in the area as crews pave a portion of the interstate that passes over Old Hwy. 10.

Also in the north metro, drivers on westbound Hwy. 10 will encounter a single lane between Bowers Drive and Beatty Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday to allow crews to install a signal for the Ramsey Northstar Commuter station.

An overnight paving project on 494 in Bloomington will result in detours tonight for drivers headed westbound. Crews will pave the auxiliary lane between 34th Avenue to northbound Cedar Av. starting at 10 p.m. Friday. That ramp will be closed until 5 a.m. Saturday, as will the ramp to 24th Avenue.

Today will be the last day to access westbound 94 from E. 7th Street in St. Paul. MnDot is closing the ramp permanently at 10 p.m. Friday as work on the new Lafayette Bridge continues. The detour will send motorists along E. 7th St. to Mounds Blvd., where there is an access ramp.

That's the same ramp drivers on northbound Hwy. 52 will be directed to when the loop ramp from the highway to westbound 94 is closed at 10 p.m. Sunday. MnDOT will rebuild the ramp and plans to reopen it in November.

For a little good news, the ramp from northbound Hwy. 52 to eastbound 94 reopend today.

Perhaps the best news of the weekend is that since school is out for Education Minnesota, workers preparing 94 between Clearwater and St. Cloud for next summer's repaving project are taking the Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday off.

No lanes in either direction will be closed starting at 3 p.m. Friday until Monday, when restrictions resume. Then it's back to a single lane both ways until Dec. 1.
