Nursing home waited to consult doctor

A resident of a New Brighton nursing home was neglected when the staff took two days to reach a doctor to deal with the man’s health crisis, the Office of Health Facility Complaints reported last week.
When the resident at Benedictine Health Center Innsbruck suffered swelling in his legs on a Friday in July, a nurse tried unsuccessfully to call the man’s doctor.
On Saturday night, the swelling worsened and the man was short of breath and lethargic, the report said.
The doctor, who was contacted on Sunday, sent the resident to a hospital. The man had renal and heart failure, a urinary infection and pneumonia. A catheter immediately removed two liters of urine.
The home updated and reviewed its notification policy with staff, the report stated.
