Mayor R.T. Rybak is on the move.

Rybak and his wife, Megan O'Hara, this week put their Kings Highway home in the East Harriet neighborhood of southwest Minneapolis on the market for just under $750,000.

Rybak mentioned several months ago that the couple was planning to downsize, with son Charlie off at college and daughter Grace heading there next fall. He said the couple are waiting to sell their house before deciding in which part of the city they'll next reside.

The couple bought the house 19 years ago through an unorthodox ploy. Living a few blocks away, they dropped off notes to owners of houses in the area they found appealing, asking if they were thinking of selling. They hit pay dirt when an elderly woman was interested in selling the clapboarded 1910 house. Rybak, who said he held a real estate license at the time, handled that transaction.

But he said he's too busy being mayor this time, and no longer has a license.

Rybak mentioned the fresh listing offhandedly at a news conference Tuesday when he announced a city home-buying assistance program aimed at foreclosed homes had been refunded.

Fran Davis, the selling agent for the Rybak house, said being owned by the mayor probably won't affect the price of the four-bedroom, three-bathroom house. "I think ultimately the house has to be valued the way an appraiser would look at it, but it might bring some people to look at it," she said.

Except for some potential exterior repairs noted in the house's truth in sale of housing report, the house appears to be in good condition, according to city records.

"It's a classic center-hall plan with the addition of a newer kitchen, first-floor family room and mud room that people have gotten used to in newer houses," Davis said.

It also comes with a property tax bill of more than $7,400 annually.
