Fire Department personnel rescued a 19-year-old man Sunday who had gotten trapped in a 300-foot-deep cave's shaft along the Mississippi River bluffs in St. Paul, authorities said.

The rescue occurred about 5 a.m. along Water Street and west of the High Bridge, according to fire officials.

The man was taken to Regions Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The victim's name has yet to be released.

Personnel also searched for other victims, but called off the effort when they found no indication of anyone else having been with the man.

Authorities say he fell into a 20-foot shaft that led to the cave and texted a friend to say he was trapped before his phone went dead. Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard says the text may have saved crews several hours of searching.
