Report on portable electronics is delayed
If you’re itching to switch on your iPad while your plane taxis for takeoff, you’re going to have to wait at least a little longer. A panel assembled by the Federal Aviation Administration to consider relaxing the rules on using portable electronic devices on airplanes has asked to delay its deadline to come up with a recommendation until Sept. 30. The panel — made up of reps from airlines, aircraft builders and electronics firms, as well as pilots, flight attendants and others — was scheduled to make a recommendation last week.

Solo travelers can find break on cruise prices
Are you a solo traveler who dreads the so-called single supplement? Here’s some good news. Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Breakaway both have single studio cabins. The upcoming Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas and other Quantum-class ships will have single inside cabins and new single balcony cabins, said Amber Blecker, a specialist in solo cruise travel who runs www.solocruiseresource.com. She says supplements can be as low as 5 to 25 percent instead of 100 percent on some luxury cruises, notably Crystal. Specialty cruises and river cruises also “periodically offer no single supplement,” Blecker said.

Oil washes ashore on popular Thai island
Streaks of crude oil marred the beach on a popular tourist island in Thailand’s eastern sea last week. Tourists were told to stay away from Samet Island’s beaches while hundreds of workers labored to clean up after an oil pipeline leak.
