Welcome to Garrison Keillor's Wisconsin retreat, where all the buildings have character, the grounds are well-tended and the views are above average. Sounds a little bit like his idyllic and fictitious Lake Wobegon, right? It can be yours. Keillor is selling the St. Croix River valley family retreat where he once lived and worked for $995,000. The 11-acre property includes 460 feet of shoreline along the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix River and four buildings, said Joyce Peterson of Coldwell Banker Burnet. She and her husband, Ralph, got the listing in September.

Keillor, born in Anoka, bought the land - mostly woods and meadows - in the early 1990s and built four buildings, including some that were created from repurposed historic log cabins. There's no shortage of personality — there's a newel post carved like a dog's head (it wasn't Keillor's dog) and a two-story kids' loft space that's accessible by a big metal ladder. Peterson said that despite the property's rustic charm, bucolic setting and famous owner, upper-bracket listings like this one aren't flying off the market. "In this case we're looking for someone who wants privacy and woods," she said.

The property has a main house with a big wrap-around porch, a giant studio with a room for big family gatherings, a cozy guest house and a writer's cottage where Keillor, radio host of the popular "A Prairie Home Companion," wrote "Wobegon Boy." Keillor, who wasn't available Thursday, keeps a busy schedule and he splits his time between a swank pied-a-terre overlooking New York's Central Park and an equally upscale house on St. Paul's Summit Avenue, so he doesn't spend as much time as he used to at the property. We'll have more details and photos in this Sunday's Homes section.
