Minnesota should join the 30 states that offer some sort of relief for military retirees.

I read with interest and a degree of disgust that consideration is being given to exempt NFL players' salaries from state income tax in order to attract a Super Bowl ("Legislators court sporting events," March 13).

Aside from nine states that have no state income tax on any form of income, 13 states exempt military retirement pay from state income tax, and 17 others, while not offering a full exemption, provide some form of preferential financial tax treatment.

Now that Minnesota has a surplus and is looking at various tax breaks, it should join the 30 states that offer military retirees a tax break. Should not Minnesota reward true service to the country rather than further propping up the NFL?
