I read with pride and sorrow the article regarding the award of the Medal of Honor to Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha ("Valor tinged by grief for fallen," Feb. 12). He and his teammates were true heroes in defending Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan.

But there was no mention of what happened to the incompetent officers who authorized and set up this indefensible base that cost eight U.S. soldiers their lives and got another 22 soldiers wounded. It would be good to know that, while we recognize and award bravery, our military also deals with incompetence that causes unnecessary casualties.
