Justin Newhall's "Spruce (No. 42)"Spruce (No. 42)

Photographer Justin Newhall hiked deep into the boggy tundra between Hudson Bay and the boreal forest of Manitoba, Canada to snap this photo of a lonely tree struggling to survive in the inhospitable terrain. Part of his "Northern Studies" show at Franklin Art Works, the image was recently issued as a limited edition print to raise money for Franklin's exhibition program. In the show's catalog, Walker Art Center curator Bartholomew Ryan compares the scrappy spruce to humans hanging on "in the face of extraordinary hardship" and salutes the "individualism that drives many to the region, and traps them there." Forty of the prints are available at $275 each, all for a good cause. Call 612-872-7494 or www.franklinartworks.org
