Expect more, pay less? When it comes to real estate, does the Target slogan apply? Realty Trac wanted to find out, so they used public records to look at home values, appreciation and property taxes in zip codes to compare the differences between those near a Walmart and Target.

What they found is that houses near a Target store posted far more appreciation - nearly double - than those near a Walmart, but as you'll see in the graphic below is that those homeowners also paid higher property taxes. We asked Realty Trac for the same data for the Twin Cities metro. It shows that in average houses near a Target had a price gain of almost $24,000, or about $2,700 higher than Walmart.
