SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man was behind bars Monday after police said he broke into a downtown Salt Lake City theater with a knife and tried to kidnap a 12-year-old actress.

Salt Lake City police say Adam Robin Green, 33, entered the Off Broadway Theatre through a backdoor Saturday night and entered a hallway restricted to cast and crew.

When the 12-year-old actress entered the hallway, Green stepped out behind her to confront her, police said. He yelled, "Hey, you!" as she ran away, according to jail records.

Salt Lake City Police Detective Greg Wilking said Green left the theater before police arrived, but soon after, reports came in of a man causing a disturbance outside a nearby restaurant.

Wilking said the man, Green, matched the description of the man in the theater.

Green was held Monday in the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of burglary, kidnapping and assault.

It was unclear if he had an attorney in the case. Messages were not returned Monday by Wojciech Nitecki, Green's public defender in a separate assault case.

Police have no indication that Green tried to target the girl before seeing her in the hallway, Wilking said.

The theater's online schedule shows several shows were scheduled that evening, but Wilking did not know if a performance was underway when Green entered the theater.

Messages left Monday with the theater were not returned.

Court records show Green was released from jail earlier this month while awaiting trial in a separate assault case.

In that case from November, prosecutors said Green hit his roommate in the head with a broom, attempted to strangle the man and then extinguished a cigarette on the roommate's forehead, according to court records.

When released from jail, Green indicated he has no income and listed his address as a Salt Lake City homeless shelter.
