Disney's 'The Little Mermaid'

Opening: Caroline Innerbichler, above, stars in the Midwest premiere of this musical at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. Disney sweetened the Hans Christian Andersen story about a mermaid who longs for a shore life and finds it with a prince. "Mermaid," which played Broadway in 2008-09, uses songs by Alan Menken from the 1989 animated film. Anyone with kids might recall "Under the Sea" or "Kiss the Girl." Plans for a national tour never took off, and the musical has had only a few regional productions, including at the Muny in St. Louis and Papermill in New Jersey. Michael Brindisi stages the show at Chanhassen with a cast that includes Tyler Michaels (fresh off "Cabaret" and before that "Fiddler on the Roof") and the comedic Kersten Rodau as Ursula. (6:30 p.m. today and next Sun.; 8 p.m. Tue., Thu.-Fri.; 1 & 8 p.m. Wed. and Sat. $47-$82. Ends Aug. 30. 501 W. 78th St., Chanhassen. 952-934-1525 or chanhassentheatres.com.)
