Work from "Codex Espanglensis"

Directed: The Intersection of Book, Film and Visual Narrative

Opening Friday: This ambitious international show, featuring multimedia work (video, film, books) by more than 70 artists, will serve as the centerpiece of the Minnesota Center for Book Arts’ 2013 Book Art Biennial. The interplay among media will be evident in moving images whose stories unfold like book narratives, and in artists’ books that employ swuch cinematic techniques as close-ups, flashbacks, slow motion and even “split screens.” Walker Art Center will loan pieces by Ed Ruscha, Marcel Broodthaers, John Baldessari, Andy Warhol, Christian Boltanski and other top-flight artists. The image shown here is from “Codex Espangliensis” (2000) by Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Enrique Chagoya and Felicia Rice. A symposium July 27-28 will explore the crossover between books and moving media through workshops, lectures, panels, film screenings and additional exhibitions. (Opening 6-9 p.m. Fri. Ends Aug. 4. Free. Minnesota Center for Book Arts, 1011 Washington Av. S., Mpls. Registration required for symposium; info at www.mnbookarts.org)
