LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY

Opening: The Children's Theatre has lined up a lot of theatrical muscle for the premiere of "Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy." Adapted from Gary Schmidt's young adult novel by playwright Cheryl West, the play is about baseball and interracial friendship a century ago. Lizzie, who's 13, and black, lives on Malaga Island in Maine. She develops a friendship, over baseball and clam digging, with a white boy her age named Turner. The two try to thwart adult plans that call for the removal of black families from the island that Lizzie and her family have called home. The production stars Traci Allen ("The Color Purple") and Sam Bardwell as the title characters. The cast, directed by Peter Brosius, includes Lee Mark Nelson, Ansa Akyea and Reed Sigmund. -ROHAN PRESTON
