Photo by Leslie Plesser Fresh from the massive Coachella festival, Florence Welch didn't let her flame-red hair down – literally or figuratively – Friday at the intimate State Theatre. As my review detailed, she was quite the Flo Bot and not the free-wheeling dervish she'd been at the Minnesota Zoo last year. Yes, after a hit sophomore album released last fall, F+M had a bigger production with an art-deco set and more musicians (two female backup singers have been added to the faceless Machine, the members of which Flo didn't introduce at the State). To be sure, Flo twirled around a bit and skipped across the stage a couple of times but it all seemed painfully choreographed. There was no spontaneity, no warmth and none of the fun experienced at the zoo last June. This was like a one-woman baroque-pop opera. Even though most Flo fans won't get this reference, her face – especially her eyes -- bears a striking resemblance to the countenance of Patti Smith, the pioneering punk-poet who is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Patti understands the primal scream; Flo just makes hers pretty and posh. If we'd wanted to experience truly soulful singing on Friday night, we probably should have gone to see the great Gladys Knight at Mystic Lake Casino. Flo + the Machine will return on July 27 to headline the Sound Town festival in Somerset, Wis. Maybe she'll loosen up outdoors. Here is the Florence + the Machine's set list from Friday at the State Theatre: Only If For a Night/ What the Water Gave Me/ Cosmic Love/ Between Two Lungs/ Rabbit Heart/ Heartlines/ Leave My Body/Lover To Lover/ You Got the Love/ Shake It Out/ Dog Days Are Over ENCORE Never Let Me Go/ No Light No Light
