Rugby match marks 40 years since crash

SANTIAGO, CHILE - An Uruguayan rugby team has played a match that was postponed for four decades after its plane crashed in the Andes, stranding some members for more than two months and forcing them to eat human flesh to stay alive.

They squared off in Santiago on Saturday against the former Chilean rugby team they were to have played in order to mark the 40th anniversary of the crash made famous by a best-selling book and a Hollywood movie.

Officials unveiled a commemorative frame with pictures of those who died in the snowy peaks. The Uruguayan Air Force plane that carried the team crashed in the cordillera in October 1972 while en route from Montevideo to Santiago.

Britney meltdown gets day in court

Britney Spears' darkest days are about to be revisited in a Los Angeles courtroom, but not by the pop singer. Instead jurors will hear testimony on claims by Spears' former manager that he was vilified and unfairly blamed for the singer's public meltdown more than four years ago. Spears' parents are defendants and will probably testify, but the jury isn't likely to hear directly from Britney. Former Spears confidante Sam Lutfi is seeking millions from the singer and her family, claiming her mother's book lied about him drugging and isolating the pop superstar. He is also seeking a portion of the singer's profits, claiming he was a key player in her 2007 album "Blackout" and had the right to serve as her manager for years. Jury selection began Friday and will continue on Tuesday, with opening statements expected later in the week.

POLANSKI VICTIM'S MEMOIR: The woman whom Roman Polanski was convicted of sexually assaulting in Los Angeles when she was a teenager will write a memoir she says promises new insight into the scandal. Samantha Geimer, 47, struck a deal with Afria Books for "The Girl: Emerging from the Shadow of Roman Polanski" for an undisclosed sum. Geimer was 13 when the movie director plied the aspiring model with champagne and quaaludes and told her he was photographing her for French Vogue. The 1977 incident occurred in a bedroom of Jack Nicholson's house.

HAMPTON AT THE GUTHRIE: British playwright Christopher Hampton will be on stage at the Guthrie Theater in more ways than one. Hampton joins Guthrie artistic director Joe Dowling for an onstage conversation Monday night. All three stages at the Guthrie are currently dedicated to Hampton's work. The Guthrie is showing Hampton's "Tales From Hollywood" and his new historical drama, "Appomattox." Another Hampton play, "Embers," opened Friday.
