Detective story A bloated, exasperated Bradley Whitford ("The West Wing") is the main reason to catch a sneak preview of "The Good Guys" (7 p.m., KMSP, Ch. 9), a buddy-cop series coming this summer. Playing a renegade detective, Whitford teams up with a strait-laced Colin Hanks and they're terrific together. If only the action scenes were as combustible as their chemistry.

Framed The miracle that is "Modern Family" (8 p.m., KSTP, Ch. 5) concludes its fabulous first season with a touching episode about Claire (Julie Bowen, right) trying to get a family portrait. Kobe Bryant makes a guest appearance, but it's the cast, most notably Ed O'Neill and Ty Burrell, that deserves All-Star status.

Casualties of war Those unaware of how drastically warfare has changed in the 21st century should get a sharp education from "Ground War" (8 p.m., KTCA, Ch. 2), a two-part series that looks at how technological advances have changed the rules of combat.
