After decades as fierce competitors, the Star Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press are on the verge of cooperating, however slightly.

The Pioneer Press soon will start distributing the Star Tribune in Washington County and western Wisconsin, a change designed to save the Star Tribune money, Star Tribune publisher Chris Harte said Monday.

The news comes less than a week after the Star Tribune's owners filed for bankruptcy. The distribution deal and the court filing are not related, Harte said.

Starting next month, the Star Tribune's fleet drivers will deliver papers to depots, where Pioneer Press drivers will pick them up and then deliver them to subscribers.
