Polaris Industries is trying to rev up the market for its revival of Indian Motorcycle by lowering the base price for the 2014 model to $18,999, more than $7,000 lower than in previous years.

The lower price also comes as the company plans a formal introduction of the new motorcycle at the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, S.D., in August.

Polaris said the Sturgis event was started in 1936 by an Indian Motorcycle club called the Jackpine Gypsies.

Medina-based Polaris acquired the Indian brand two years ago, and the 2013 model sells for $26,500 to $37,900.

The firm decided to sell the 2014 model "at a price point that is competitive and more accessible to people who are looking for authenticity and choice in American motorcycles," said Steve Menneto, vice president of Polaris motorcycles.

First introduced in 1922, the Indian Chief is the most popular of the Indian models. The 2014 model is to be available through North American dealerships later this year.
