Micromedics Inc., a local medical device manufacturer, has entered into an agreement to be acquired for an undisclosed amount by an Ohio-based business.

Nordson Corp., a manufacturer based in Westlake, Ohio, said Micromedics will grow its position in the market and add to its expertise in "precision dispensing technology." Nordson is acquiring Micromedic's biomaterials applicator business. The deal is expected to close within 30 days.

St. Paul-based Micromedics had annual sales of $15 million, said Curt Miller, the company's president in an interview on Wednesday. About two-thirds of its sales were from its biomaterials applicator business.

The other third of Micromedics' business is represented in surgical instrument protection and products involving the ear, nose and throat. This part of Micromedics' business will be spun out into a new company called Summit Medical Inc. Summit Medical will be based in Minnesota, Miller said.

Micromedics employs about 80 employees. Some of the employees will remain with Nordson, while others will be employed in the spin-off company, Miller said.

Nordson did not immediately return a call for comment.
