A teen boy is dead after a large fight ended in gunfire early Sunday morning.

Brooklyn Park Police Capt. Jeff Ankerfelt said officers were responding to reports of a large number of people fighting when calls came in about shots fired around 12:30 a.m. Moments after officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old teen with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest at the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Xerxes Avenue in Brooklyn Park.

The teen has not been identified and the medical examiner is performing an autopsy today.

Ankerfelt said it appears the shooting came at the end of a party at a nearby home, where an estimated 60 to 70 people had gathered. People were running in different directions and a search was conducted for suspects. Police are interviewing several witnesses.

Ankerfelt said police are still trying to determine what led to the shooting. "We're still trying to sort through all that information and discover the motive," he said.
