Alligator found in Minnesota pond goes to jail

Last update: July 3, 2009 - 7:25 PM

EAGAN, Minn. - An alligator wound up in the Eagan jail Friday after being spotted in a local pond.

A family reported seeing the 3-foot alligator and called police.

Hennepin County Animal Control officials had the day off because of the Fourth of July holiday, leaving Eagan police to apprehend the creature. No one was injured.

The Minnesota Herpetological Society said it will take the alligator.

Police said someone likely was raising it as a pet and then attempted to get rid of it.
