MADISON, Wis. — A Republican lawmaker is circulating a bill that would prohibit Wisconsin police from enforcing any new federal gun and ammunition restrictions, bans or weapon registration requirements.
Rep. Michael Schraa's bill also would declare that firearms manufactured in Wisconsin have not traveled in interstate commerce and therefore aren't subject to federal regulation under the commerce clause.
Schraa, an Oshkosh Republican who is also a member of the National Rifle Association, sent out an email Tuesday to the Legislature seeking co-sponsors. He also issued a statement to the media saying the bill is designed to tell the federal government Wisconsin won't help curtail constitutional gun rights.
According to the Council of State Governments, eight other states have adopted similar legislation saying the federal commerce act doesn't apply to weapons within their boundaries.
