• Born in New Orleans, La.; 51 years old

• He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children and live in Jefferson, La.

• Is the third-highest ranking House Republican and has a round-the-clock Capitol Police detail.

• As House Majority Whip, he is the chief vote counter in the Republican conference. He was elected to the position in 2014.

• A self-described strong conservative leader.

• A member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

• Been an avid participant in the annual congressional baseball game since arriving in Congress. He was standing on second base, fielding balls during batting practice when the shooting began, Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said.

• He has been in Congress since 2008 and represents the First Congressional District of Louisiana, a district that includes some New Orleans suburbs and bayou parishes.

• Before entering Congress, he was a lawmaker in Louisiana for 12 years.

•Went to Louisiana State University where he earned a computer science degree and minored in political science.
