The Twin Cities' most experienced salespeople say the shopping experience doesn't have to be totally unsatisfying. They're here to help and offer these tips:

Be as clear as you can about what you want. "I need something to wear to a wedding" will help a salesperson focus.

Take along a trusted friend for a second opinion if you have trouble saying no. Good salespeople will ask your opinion or watch for signs of hesitation.

Ask if a salesperson is paid on commission. It subtly lets them know you don't want to be pressured. Say "I need a few minutes" when feeling the heat.

If a salesperson's suggestion is too far afield, say "It's not really me."

Look for a salesperson who dresses like you want to or who has a similar body type if you're hard to fit.

MORE TIPS FOR SHOPPERS

Bring in photos of what you like or the look you want.

Be upfront about your budget. If an item that you like is out of your budget, ask about upcoming sales.

Call a salesperson to select some items in advance to save you time. When supplementing existing pieces, e-mail photos in advance, bring in photos or wear the outfit.

Ask a salesperson to help select outfit combinations and identify any missing pieces from your existing wardrobe. Sounds over the top, but it's becoming more common.
