Mary Ann Backman

76, of Eden Prairie, MN, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on April 6, 2024.

Mary (Lehtinen) was born on June 7, 1947, to Eino and Helen (Sregzinski) Lehtinen in Virginia, MN. She spent her childhood in Mountain Iron, MN, until moving to New Hope. Mary was in the first graduating class at Cooper High School (Robbinsdale) in 1965.

Mary was joined in marriage to James Backman on February 10, 1967. Together, they welcomed two sons, Scott and Jeff. They made their home in Maple Grove, MN.

As a family, they cherished spending time during the summers on Lake Vermillion. Mary also enjoyed going to casinos, playing cards, shopping at garage sales, knitting, reading, bingo and playing with her grandchildren.

Mary was a courageous fighter who approached life's challenges with resilience and determination. Despite suffering a stroke in 2013, she continued to embrace life fully by attending family gatherings, going to dance recitals, and cheering for her grandkids at soccer, lacrosse and hockey games.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Jim Backman; her brother, David Lehtinen and her sister, Carol Pohto.

Mary is survived by her loving children: Scott Backman (Anjanette) and Jeff Backman (Sarah); her cherished grandchildren, Olivia and Evan Backman; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A Celebration of Life in honor of Mary will be held at Mississippi Crossings Event Center; 307 E. River Pkwy Champlin, MN. on Thursday, May 9th, 2024 at 3 PM with visitation one hour prior. Please join for refreshments and fellowship following the service.
