Smith, Carl S. 75, passed away in December 2023. Carl was born in Detroit, Michigan to his parents, Lewis and Nellie. In the 1960's he was a pioneer in leading revolutionary work at Detroit's Blackstar Printing, which printed obituaries and overall served as a better "Voice" for African Americans at that time in the community. Carl always joked around when growing up that instead of staying out late with friends to play sports, he took that time to study, which contributed to his success in graduating from the University of Michigan with his BS in Mathematics and later completing his MD at U of MI as well. He completed his residency at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI and his fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. He worked at Hennepin Health Systems for over 30 years, where he became the Division Chief of Urology in the Department of Surgery and a Senior Associate Physician at Hennepin Faculty Associates (HFA). Above all, he was known for his outgoing personality, kindness, sense of humor, respectful nature, a passion for helping others, and was a well-regarded healer to many. In his leisure time he always enjoyed mathematics, research, playing his French horn solo and in different groups, and music of many genres such as jazz, Brazilian, and Motown. He also enjoyed gardening, swimming, and traveling. He loved his wife, two daughters, and showed so much happiness and joy towards his grandsons, who called him "Pop Pop." He is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Nellie, and brother Dwight. He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda, daughters, Kimberly and Laura (C.J.), grandsons (Ari, Taj, and Xavier), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A private funeral will be held and future celebration of life events will be determined at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please donate to cancer research, food shelves, youth mentorship programs, and other charities of your choice in his honor.
