Canedy, Brenda Haram Brenda Kathleen Haram Canedy, passed away August 2, 2023, at the age of 90 at Jones- Harrison Residence where she had lived since 2018. Brenda was born November 13, 1932 in Marion, IN, the daughter of Margaret Weesner Haram and Benjamin Lewis Haram. She had three sisters; Nancy, who died before Brenda was born, Mary Sydney and Cynthia. Brenda attended public school in Marion through the eighth grade. She then attended Tudor Hall School in Indianapolis, IN for her last four years of high school. She graduated from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, MA receiving a Bachelor's degree in English. After one year at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN majoring in education, she taught at Tudor Hall School in Indianapolis, IN. On September 15, 1956 Brenda and Norman Canedy were married in Marion and moved to New York City. Brenda taught at Nightingale Bamford School while Norman trained as a museum curator and worked on his Ph.D. dissertation. They worked in New York City during the school year and spent summers in Europe where Norman was researching material for his dissertation and Brenda took notes for him. From New York City, Norman's work took the Canedys to Cambridge, MA where Brenda was assistant to the director of Women's Archives at Radcliffe. From there they went to Philadelphia, PA and London, England. Brenda and Norman moved to Minneapolis, MN following the completion of Norman's dissertation and his acceptance of an offer to teach at the University of Minnesota. Brenda taught at Mt. Summit School and earned an M.S. in Nursing and a Ph.D. in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Minnesota. She then taught at the University. Brenda was honored by the University of Minnesota as a Distinguished Alumni in the School of Nursing and along with a number of scholarly articles, she had two books published by the University: The Definition, Maintenance, and Spanning of Boundaries: Case Study of a Nursing Service Department and Remembering Things Past: A Heritage of Excellence - a book honoring the diamond jubilee of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. She then became the Director of the Graduate Nursing Program at the College of St. Catherine while maintaining a private Mental Health practice, retiring in 2012. Brenda was a member of Minnesota Chapter CD of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, The Minnesota Society of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. the Damaris Shattuck Chapter of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century and the Minneapolis Women's Club. Brenda and Norman enjoyed their dancing club and doing water aerobics at the Calhoun Beach Club. Brenda is survived by her sisters, Mary Sydney Matuska of Midland, MI and Cynthia Pidgeon and her husband Richard of Fishers, IN, two nieces , Susan Haram Pidgeon Kiley (Dan) Fishers, IN and Kysa Lynn Canedy Cohen (Greg) Orange, CA and five nephews, David Christopher Pidgeon (Connie) Fishers, IN, Stephen Bradley Pidgeon (Amber) Fishers, IN, Benjamin Frank Matuska (Jennifer) Winnetka, IL, John Haram Matuska (Shannon) Wolverine Lake, MI and Clark Canedy (Colleen) Palm Desert, CA, nine grandnieces, seven grandnephew and their spouses. Two great-grandnephews, and two first cousins. She is also survived by devoted "appointed family" Sally Field Higgins and Tim Higgins of Hudson, WI, Peggy, Hal and Claire Galvin, Emily and Sam Flood and San and Sheila Asato all of Minneapolis, MN. Brenda was preceded in death by Norman Wigton Canedy, her beloved husband of 64 years, her sister Nancy, her parents Margaret and Ben Haram, grandparents Edna and Edwin Lenox Weesner and Edith and Norman Potterton, mother and father-in-law Violet and Lyell Canedy, brother-in-law Donald Canedy and his wife Evelyn, brother-in-law Richard Matuska, nephews Robert Pidgeon and Todd Canedy, aunts and uncles Elizabeth and Harold Smith and Marjorie Haram Bostock and Bertram Bostock . She was also predeceased by cousins Tony Bostock, Margaret Caroline Smith Kazwara and, Edwin Smith. Cremation will be handled by Washburn-Mcreavy Funeral Home. A memorial service for Brenda and Norman will be held at the Minneapolis Women's Club on September 16, 2023, 11:30AM-1:30PM.
