Deinard, Amos Samuel passed away at the age of 86 on March 9th, 2022, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Amos is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sue (Iverson) Deinard; his two sons Amos Stanley and Spencer Harris and his daughter Sarah Benedicta; and his two grandchildren Audrey Lees and Eilam Tomokazu. He is also survived by his sister Miriam Josephine Kelen and brother-in-law Erwin Anton Kelen; niece and nephews Sarah Kelen, Robert Kelen and Peter Kelen; and cousins Richard Cardozo and David Deinard. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hortense (Honig) and Amos Spencer Deinard. Born in Minneapolis on November 12th, 1935, he attended and graduated Blake School in 1953. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Harvard University in 1957 and after a single year of law school at the University of Minnesota (1957-58), he found his calling in medicine, graduating from the University of Minnesota Medical school in 1962. He obtained his M.P.H. degree in Maternal and Child Health from the University of Minnesota, School of Public Health, in 1985. Amos joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics in 1969 and stayed until retirement. From 1984 to 1999, he was the director of the Community-University Health Care Center in Minneapolis. While there, he started the first medical/legal partnership in the country in order to provide pro-bono assistance to clinic patients. In 2005, he helped found and direct the Minnesota Oral Health Project, an educational/research project, where the primary mission has been to increase public awareness of the caries crisis affecting high- risk children (children from birth to six years of age in Greater (rural) Minnesota), improve access to early caries prevention services through training and support for medical and dental providers and to educate caregivers about healthy dental practices. crush cavities.com/meet-dr-deinard/. Over his long career, he was active and participated in many University of Minnesota Hospital and University committees, both as member and Chair, and was particularly proud of his time spent on the University's Senate Judicial Committee. He had numerous publications and earned a multiple awards and honors over his career, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Public Health Association. He was an avid stamp collector, loved the Opera and was a devoted and longtime suffering Minnesota Viking season ticket holder since 1962.
