Judith M. Roy, daughter of the late Louis J. and Marie V. Roy of Troy, NY, died January 4, 2021 following a brief illness in Oakdale, Minnesota. Born on August 24, 1945 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY. Judith was educated in Lansingburgh schools graduating from Catholic Central High School in 1963 as a member of the National Honor Society and winner of a New York State Regents Scholarship. Judith began her college studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., completing both her B.A and M.A. in History at the University of Colorado at Boulder while raising two young daughters. She subsequently joined the faculty of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana for several years, later joining the faculty of Century College in White Bear Lake, Minnesota in 1994, where she remained until she retired twenty-four years later following the 2017-2018 academic year. From the beginning, Judith's tenure at Century College was shaped not only by her teaching, but also by her service to the institution and the wider community. She served as a long-time member and then chair of the Academic Affairs and Standards Council (AASC). Judith was the founding mother of Century College's Women's Studies program (now Gender Studies); she first marshalled like-minded faculty to establish the program and then spearheaded the effort to create the first Women's Studies academic certificate in the state system. Her reach in Women and Gender Studies was wide. In 2005, Judith was elected president of the National Women's Studies Association. She was the first, and still only, two-year college faculty member elected to the position for an organization that includes public and private higher education institutions offering associate, baccalaureate, and graduate degrees. Judith was preceded in death by her life partner of 30 years, Gene Roberts. She is survived by her former husband James T. Hynes (Boulder, Colorado and Paris, France), their two daughters Michelle Hynes (husband Todd Fine) of Roswell, Georgia and Lauren Hynes of Longmont, Colorado and their grandchildren Sophia Feller, Ian Feller, and Zachary Fine. She is also survived by her brother Richard G. Roy and his spouse Stephen K. Peterson of Albany, NY. Especially during her youth, but also later in life, Judith was an accomplished dancer having performed in both school and community productions. Among her other interests were music, travel, art and literature. She loved to travel, both in Europe and in the United States, often in a professional capacity, such as research at the University of Toronto and the Wellcome Institute in London. On a personal note, she was a devoted fan of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly, as well as of the works of AA Milne, PG Wodehouse, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Gilbert and Sullivan. Her love of popcorn has been passed on to her children and grandchildren. Scholar, activist, mentor, friend, beloved mother and Mimere, the loss of Judith leaves an immeasurable hole in our lives, but she continues to live on in our memories and in the many lives that she has touched. A celebration of life for Judith will be held at a later date. Those who would like to make a gift in Judith's memory may do so at Doctors Without Borders, one of her favorite charities.
