Paint by numbers

Turns out those caricatures you get done at the county fair are a bit of a rip-off, at least compared with the art whipped out on "Portrait Artist of the Year," a new series that goes down well with tea and crumpets. This quest to find the United Kingdom's best portrait artist can sometimes be as excruciating as watching paint dry, but it's nice to see a reality show that doesn't rely on hot-tempered contestants getting drunk and preening for the camera. Hosts Joan Bakewell and Frank Skinner (pictured) take their job so seriously you're almost convinced that the competition matters. Luminaries Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming and "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams are among the celebrities who pose patiently for would-be Rembrandts vying for a chance to have their work displayed in London's National Portrait Gallery and take home a jumbo case of Crayolas. 11 a.m. Sunday, Ovation

Happy days are here again

Those who think an early episode of "The Simpsons" constitutes "classic TV" are encouraged to check out "The Judy Garland Show," the short-lived mid-1960s variety program that showcased the talents of a performer who was much more than the girl who followed the Yellow Brick Road. Despite troubles behind the scenes and a temperamental star, the show managed to attract some of the biggest names in the biz, including Mickey Rooney, Barbra Streisand and Lena Horne. 7 p.m. Monday, GetTV

Big wheels

"The Voice" may not be making stars, but it sure can attract them. The recent Emmy-winning series welcomes consultants Missy Elliott, Selena Gomez, Brad Paisley and John Fogerty, who teach contestants that the proper way to pronounce "turning," at least when it comes to the Proud Mary, is "toyning." 8 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, KARE, Ch. 11

Hallelujah

"Black-ish" isn't taking its renewal lightly. The second season is off to a strong start, tackling touchy issues without losing the good-natured charm that made the show a rookie favorite. In this episode, Anthony Anderson (who looks like he spent the summer sipping nothing but SlimFast) surprises himself by enjoying church. 8:31 p.m. Wednesday, KSTP, Ch. 5
