Lawmakers rushed new relief to employers and hospitals buckling under the strain of a pandemic that has claimed almost 50,000 American lives and one in six U.S. jobs.
Though a small, vocal minority has called the sweeping public closures and limits on gatherings over the top, most Americans say government orders to limit contact are the right call.
Passage was quick after Congress and the White House reached a deal to replenish a small-business payroll fund and provided new money for hospitals and testing.
