Letter of the Day: Discontinue Israeli aid until country acts more like an ally

March 12, 2010 at 11:35PM

When the government of Israel has the audacity to announce the continuation of its settlement expansion in East Jerusalem on the same day that Vice President Joe Biden arrives in the country to assist in the negotiation process, it ought to be a wake-up call to America. What an insult! Israel, by far the largest recipient of U.S. aid at $3 billion a year, continues to defy America by seizing Palestinian land and building settlements. The United States has committed another $30 billion to Israel over the next 10 years. When are Americans going to realize that we are just inviting another 9/11 terrorist action because of our biased, unwavering support for Israel? Since our supposed ally continues to poke a stick in our eye, there ought to be a price paid. Discontinue U.S. aid to Israel until it begins to act like our ally. JIM DEWALL, St. Louis Park

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
