By the numbers

Last year, at least 22 women in Minnesota were killed by people they loved or once loved, six more than in 2014, according to statistics released by the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women in its annual Femicide Report.

At least nine family members or friends were murdered (four more than in 2014), and at least three men died from domestic violence, one more than in 2014.

The coalition uses the phrase "at least" because it relies on public information for its report, which includes media reports, public court data and follow-up with law enforcement agencies. Discrepancies in how the information is collected and shared make it difficult to come up with firm numbers.

According to the report

"Almost every year there are deaths of women that are considered suspicious, but the cases are not resolved."

So far in 2016, the coalition has recorded three confirmed cases of intimate partner homicides and is tracking eight additional cases to see if they fall within the criteria.
