Why selected: The head of the world's largest chain of hair salons wanted to improve customer service and sales at the company's more than 7,000 outlets.

What happened: A new point-of-sale system was blamed for some sales declines. Sales at Regis declined for 20 straight quarters before Hanrahan started in August 2012, so he isn't expecting recovery to happen overnight. "We're creating a healthy business for our shareholders. It's going as we planned."
